Technician Spotlight: Tom Brdar of Nashville Trane
Technician: Tom Brdar | HVAC | Trane | 15 Years
What brought you into the industry?
I came into this industry through a military program called “Helmets to Hardhats”. It helps a soldier transition to a civilian life and helps finance his or her education through a Trade School.
What was the first thing you learned on your first day?
I learned that Watching 40 hours of Safety videos actually takes a lot longer than 40 hours…
Over your years, what is the most important lesson you have learned?
I have learned that the best technicians don’t have all of the answers, just a solid understanding of the basics. With that understanding, a good friendly attitude, and perseverance, you can figure anything out and make your customers really happy.
What advice would you give to a kid just starting out in the industry?
Read. Read everything you can. Read to obtain the understanding of how things work. The more of a mechanical understanding that you have the easier troubleshooting will be for you.
Why do you love the trades?
I love the feeling that I get when I’ve figured out a tough problem or have provided a good solution for someone who is struggling with old or faulty equipment. I also really enjoy teaching people and watching them gain a new understanding or insight. The look of revelation going across someone’s face when they really understand what the issue was and how it was repaired. I also enjoy working with the various contractors and customers that we serve. It is never the same problem or the same place. So it is always a new challenge!
